Broadway
Broadway is the oldest north-south main thoroughfare in the city. But, it is perhaps best-known for its theatres that have many large-scale plays, mostly musicals. Singing and dancing
The Theatre District is located near Times Square, at Broadway and Seventh Avenue in midtown Manhattan. This area is possible the most-recognized street in the world, being featured in many movies and television shows. There are almost forty larger professional theatres in this area, with many more smaller ones as well. Since the US does not have a nationwide government-subsidized theater program, the shows that are seen here are usually more populist and less avant-garde. The riskier shows can be seen off-Broadway.
Musicals such as Rent, Les Miserables, and Phantom of the Opera have been performed on Broadway and have been critically acclaimed. The Phantom of the Opera is the longest running musical with 7486 performances. In addition to the long runs at Broadway theaters, many of the producers copy the production with a new cast and crew to go on tour around the country. Often well-known performers will be cast in the productions that are on-stage or traveling to bring more people out to see it or to bring back people who have seen the play already. Broadway shows and artists are awarded every June with the Antoinette Perry Awards (the Tony Awards), given by the American Theater Wind. This is the highest award in theater and bring a lot of media attention to the productions.
